Speech and Language Prevention, Assessment, Intervention, Program Design, Data Collection, Analysis, and Compliance
The Speech Team is comprised of Speech-Language Pathologists and Speech-Language Pathology Assistants.
- We collaborate with principals and school staff who work with students
- We work with families to support students who need speech-language services
- We screen kindergarten students to support Response to Intervention (RtI)
- We work with students who have literacy difficulties. We have headed the Gold Camp kindergarten transition over the last two summers
Early Communication Skills
Ages 3-4
- Hears when called from another room
- Answers WHO, WHAT, WHERE, and WHY questions
- Talks about school
- Can be understood by a familiar listener
- Uses 4 or more words in a phrase
- Talks without repeating syllables or words
How Parents can support at this age:
- Make silly pictures and have your child describe why it is silly
- Sort pictures into categories
- Expand vocabulary by reading, singing, rhyming, discussing daily events, etc.
Ages 4-5
- Pays attention to a short story and answers simple questions
- Hears and understands most of what is said at home and school
- Uses details in sentences
- Stays on topic when telling a story
- Says most sounds correctly
How Parents can support at this age:
- Talk about spatial relationships (up/down, big/little, first/last)
- Form and explain categories
- Increase vocabulary by reading, explaining meanings, and playing games
- Memory exercises - remembering names, numbers, locations, etc.
